BRANCH ACTIVITIES

MONTHLY PROGRAMS

Portland AAUW plans and holds monthly meetings with programs related to the mission. Meetings vary in date and time in an effort to accomodate the varying schedules of our members. Programs are open to the public. Information about the current branch program can easily be found on the Home page and on the first page of The Rose City Reporter, our newsletter.

STUDY/INTEREST GROUPS

Study/Interest groups are a great way to get involved in Portland AAUW. Our 15 groups enjoy the arts and culture, reading and study, food and fun. Interesting conversations occur in smaller group settings with like-minded women, and fast friendships can be made. Click here for a list or go to the current newsletter for details.

PUBLIC POLICY

Since AAUW’s founding, members have spoken out about policies important to women and girls. With their voices, invaluable legislation has been passed, including the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. With the member-endorsed Public Policy Program as our guide, AAUW uses lobbying and grassroots efforts to push forward policies that break through educational and economic barriers for women.

BRANCH STRATEGIC PLANS

The branch’s Strategic Plans guide branch activities in the areas of
STEM, college/university partnerships, and fundraising.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

This year’s branch STEM project, arranged through Saturday Academy and the Girl Scouts, is well underway. AAUW members are providing the adult supervision to teen girls who are teaching simple computer programming to younger girls in the "GET" (Girls Engaged in Technology) program created and developed by branch member Barbara Miner. The computer software used is called “Scratch”, a kid-friendly, graphics-based, development platform. “Scratch” allows girls to dream up, design and program cool interactive scenes, build cartoons, invitations, greeting cards and even add sounds. Contact Lisa Perrine or Sue Thomas if you are interested in participating.

College/University Partnerships

AAUW's College/University Partner Member Program provides PCC and PSU the opportunity to easily share all the benefits of AAUW with students, faculty, and staff. PSU and Portland branch collaborate on programs of interest to the community. All undergraduate students of partner institutions are eligible for free e-student affiliate status. E-student affiliates receive electronic copies of AAUW's publications and research and have access to all AAUW's student affiliate benefits, including the vast array of leadership and professional development resources, the more than $3 million in fellowships, grants, and awards, access to local branch scholarships, and opportunities for networking and outreach on campus and beyond through collaborations with local branches on relevant community initiatives.  College/University Relations Strategic Plan

Fundraising

AAUW of Portland actively participates in fundraising for AAUW Funds and our local scholarship. For more information about the various programs supported by AAUW Funds, click here. Our local scholarship is administered by the PCC Foundation and goes to a returning female student in the STEM field, with plans to transfer to a 4-year institution.
