We were very fortunate that Judy Margles, Executive Director, led our tour. She is retiring at the end of this year after being director at the museum since 1999. Thank you to AAUW member Liz Lippoff for arranging this event.
The museum’s main gallery features rotating exhibitions of national and international stature. Four core exhibits anchor the museum, including "Discrimination and Resistance, An Oregon Primer", which identifies discrimination as a tool used to affect varied groups of people over the history of this region.

2023 Annual Meeting

Twenty-three members attended this first in-person meeting to be held after the pandemic. Claudia Gray was our special guest. She spoke about AAUW Funds, the Legacy Circle, and the work of the National Advancement Committee.
Aging Out of the Foster System--What's Next?

Portland AAUW Branch joined the Lake Oswego Branch to hear from the Oregon Foster Youth Connection about young women aging out of the foster care system in Oregon.

Our guest speaker was Liliana Luna, Coordinator of the Multicultural Center at Rock Creek Campus, PCC, and the DREAMer Center (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors). Ms. Luna, a DACA recipient, will share her work with immigrant families at the border, as well as her work on campus

“Equal Opportunities in Our Schools: A Title IX Overview”
Special guests were former Oregon Representative, now Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge Ann Lininger and Oregon Senator Kathleen Taylor, who both played critical roles in passing the Oregon Equal Pay Law of 2017.
Karin Moscon, ODE Civil Right Specialist and Title IX Coordinator for the 204 Oregon school districts and 17 community colleges, provided an overview of Title IX, why it is important to preserve and protect this important legislation and what is being done in Oregon to ensure equal access to a high-quality education for all of Oregon’s students.

Feminism: The Next Chapter

"Intersectional feminism" is the understanding of how race, class, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation impact the way women experience oppression and discrimination. Speakers were Amanda Manjarrez, a graduate of Lewis and Clark Law School and the Advocacy Director of the Coalition of Communities of Color (CCC), and Nikki Fisher, the Executive Director of the Bus Project and a Commissioner with the Oregon Commission for Women.
Family Preservation Project (FPP), A Program of the YWCA of Greater Portland

Held on the 23rd floor of the Mirabella overlooking the Willamette and the West Hills, members enjoyed a buffet brunch followed by a presentation by Jessica Katz, Program Director, Center for Justice Involved Families. The FPP at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility has provided intensive case management and wrap-around services to incarcerated mothers, their children, and the children’s caregivers in the community. The program helps children and mothers keep, repair, and create healthy relationships, in order to ensure successful reentry and interrupt the cycle of intergenerational criminal justice involvement, poverty, and addiction.
Private Tour of Exhibition of Paintings by Rosemarie Beck

Patricia Schechter, professor of U.S. women’s history at PSU, gave the branch a tour of the Rosemarie Beck art exhibit that she coproduced with PSU’s art history faculty member, Sue Taylor. Rosemarie Beck (1923-2003) was an American modernist painter with a realist style influenced by Impressionism and, in particular, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cezanne.
General Branch "Kick-Off" Meeting

We began an exciting new year in the Mirabella's garden room with a potluck brunch. The facilitator for each of our branch’s numerous study and interest groups gave a brief talk discussing the activity, highlights, future plans and how to get involved.

Elizabeth Nye Executive Director, Girls, Inc. of NW Oregon was the guest speaker. Meeting in Aria East of the Mirabella, members and guests enjoyed delicious food, caught up with old and new members, and learned about Girls, Inc., an organization that provides gender-specific programming to help girls be strong, smart, and bold.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX, we were honored to have Teri Mariani, a coach and athletic administrator at PSU for 29 years, as our guest speaker. Teri shared her experiences and struggles as a student athlete and advocate for female athletes before and after the passage of Title IX.
